  • Unhelpful diabetes advice
Castle Healthcare Practice 25 Oct 18

I recently accompanied my partner to a nurse appointment following his diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. I came away really disappointed with the advice offered, which amounted to "everything in moderation". That advice might be fine for the healthy population, but when you have been diagnosed with a serious condition like diabetes I do feel it is important to be more specific about actual changes you can make to improve your health outcomes. Despite relaying to the nurse my partner's alcohol consumption is between 24-30 units a week, she did not recommend cutting down, because "everything in moderation", and "It's important to still have a life". Therefore, the advice was to continue to try and have 1-2 days alcohol-free. I have to ask do all medical professionals view the NHS alcohol consumption guidelines as worthless? He left the appointment with the understanding his alcohol consumption did not need to change, as advised by a qualified medical professional. Yet it's the alcohol that has contributed the obesity and subsequent diabetes. So, I suppose now we just wait for the impending cardiovascular disease. But at least we know he has a life, even if it is to the cost of his health, and to the cost and time of the NHS.

  • Pain clinic appointment

I visited this facility today for an appointment at the pain clinic. I tried to register on the computer access but was unable to. I went to the receptionist who was quite sharp with me & stated I would not be able to register unless I was a patient at the practice. She asked my name & even though I am disabled said I needed to go up the stairs & just wait. Seeing the look on my face she said oh and there's a lift. Went up one floor in the lift to a large expanse of rooms for different people. Computer down so couldn't log in. No sign to say was in right place, no person to ask. After hubby went down to ask what to do she tersely said she had logged me in & just to wait. After one hour was seen & was informed computer down so it was not possible to access records. It would have been nice to have a sign at reception for pain clinic appointments so you know where to go. To be told I had been logged in and a sign upstairs saying pain clinic patients.

  • Overall a good service

In general I cannot complain about the service at Castle Healthcare. The staff on the phone, on reception and the Doctors themselves have all been great and have done all they can to help when I've had a question or a problem. Communication could be a little better at times and it does sometimes take a while to get through on the phone but to be honest I understand that it's a busy practice and that I can't always expect instant responses.

Have been several times to this surgery- you can never see the same doctor and care is very much dependant on the GP. Always running behind schedule even on the same day triage doctor I had to sit with my small child for over an hour. Very disappointing!

Referred by NEMS at 2.30am Saturday morning for an 8.30am GP appointment for our son at our request. Arrived, was seen early and the Dr was excellent. Pharmacy on site so my son's Croup was solved without need of an Ambulance. Also have to credit NHS 111 and NEMS - seamless and efficient way to avoid ambulance resource being used for an important but not life threatening need. Thanks to all involved, a very comfortable little boy by 10am!

I am so impressed with the quick and efficient response from the team at Castle Healthcare in West Bridgford. I saw a GP today, who was thorough, informative and reassuring. The reception staff were friendly and helpful, and further tests have been arranged within a week. I really could not ask for more.

Superb assessment from beginning to end. Rang about my sore ankle and put onto triage and had prompt call back. Assessed face to face by very nice Dr who arranged urgent Xray and subsequent telephone review a week later to check how I was doing. Super stuff. Many thanks to all involved.

This Practice is giving a really good service despite winter problems and a large elderly population. Yes, you may have to wait a few minutes for the phone to be answered, especially if you phone at a busy time, but that is inevitable. And you know you will be triaged for the appropriate support if your problem is urgent that very day. Otherwise you can get an appointment within a reasonable time ( online if you use this service which is great at midnight! ). Patients complain it may not be their usual doctor but that’s understandable given the hours they work plus outside clinics etc. I’ve ‘ cultivated’ more than one doctor but they’re all good and sometimes it’s helpful to get a fresh perspective. I’ve benefited from taking part in the weekly walking group and the hot chocolate in the cafe afterwards is great!

I had booked 2 separate appointments for bloods and the flu vaccination; the nurse I saw did both on the same day, so I was able to cancel the second appointment.. I was called before my official time and the nurse was very efficient and friendly. Excellent service!

  • Inconsistent, long waits and errors

It was easier to get an appointment with this practice when it was the smaller, Ludlow Hill surgery. I now find it difficult to get an appointment, and when I do it is usually with a trainee doctor. It is in this latter experience that I have now twice experienced errors (either with diagnosis or with and extra '0' given on the volume for a prescription!), which took yet more time (after the usual wait in the surgery for the appointment) to sort. There also seems to be a lack of female, fully qualified doctors. Although the practice was busy when it was 'Ludlow Hill', it felt more personal, and it was possible to get an appointment with a GP you had seem before. In this case, bigger has not proven to be better.

Our little boy is now 8 months old. The surgery has been nothing but supportive over this time. Our access to appointments, appropriate well timed treatment and hospital referrals has seemed to hit the right balance throughout and we have always had things thoroughly explained to us. As new parents, we have felt that castle healthcare has been a great support in ensuring our baby gets the best start in life. Thank you to the entire team

Doctors I have seen have been very helpful but it's very difficult to get through to the surgery on the phone and then to get a booking. This big medical centre was sold to us on the basis of improved service compared to our old single surgery but that is manifestly not the case. Oh for the days of our old family GP

Too inconsistent with service and care, most recently, had to wait 40 minutes, then they could not find my sons records then suddenly they appeared, no gloves used during inspection?? and poor diagnosis. this is our second bad experience with this particular doctor.

I have always had positive experiences at this practice but yesterday's visit was exceptional. Reception staff could not have been more helpful, they are always welcoming and respectful. After ringing and hoping for an emergency appointment for my child we were seen almost immediately. The GP we saw was amazing with my child, putting us both at ease and conferring with other staff members, the invaluable aspect to a multidisciplinary team. I would highly recommend this practice to anyone, the staff are a credit to the NHS.

The day I went to Castle, there was no IT available owing to the, cyber attack, and yet everything was runnning extremely smoothly. Without access to IT, the surgery had none of the usual information e.g. No record of patient appointments, no patient records, no direct links to the hospitals etc. Reception staff were using pen and paper to keep tract of patients, to notify the relevant doctors; doctors were taking patient details during the course of their appointment. All the staff were friendly, patient, and determined that things ran as smoothly as possible. It was amazingly impressive.

After having undergone a day surgery a week ago I suspect an infected wound. I rang the relevant QMC department and was directed to my GP. the receptionist told me I ll get a call back from gp. A doctor called me and was seen within 2 hours. They were efficient and very professional. Thanks.

I have had various complications of diabetes, including heart attack, pancreatitis and a unirary tract/prostate infection, leading to septicaemia. I was very unwell, unable to get up and rapidly becoming extremely weak. I started to say my 'good by's to my family... I have, however, received excellent healthcare from the NHS, ably lead and co-ordinated by the doctor at Castle Healthcare Medical Centre. This has included a stay and treatment in hospital, consultations with specialists, careful monitoring and adjustment of medication, medical care at home, assistance with equipment whilst disabled, cardiac monitoring and now cardiac rehabilitation. The result is that I am now much better, able to walk and conduct a normal life again. I am really very grateful for the professionalism and hard work of all the team in the NHS who have provided this excellent care and have helped me get so much better!
